A note from Oahu HSA: Update 5/29/09:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
IMPORTANT UPDATE 5/28 8pm:
Update 5/26/09: We will post the schedule for States here if we receive one. Be ready to surf by 7am June 4 just to be safe.
IMPORTANT UPDATE 5/23/09: We just heard the deadline for States entries was Friday 5/22. Luckily we sent the entry forms to everyone over a month ago, so there has been plenty of time to send them in. However, because of the mix-up (the entry form says "5 days prior"), we've been given a few extra days to get them in so, if you haven't sent yours in yet, send them in now. The sooner the better so we can hopefully get a schedule beforehand.
Reminder: If you have any questions regarding States, don't hesitate to email Michelle at bigislandhasa@yahoo.com or call Adam at 934-7343. Phone calls will only be returned regarding information that is not on the website or entry form. Phone calls to our personal home number will not be returned. Also, please do not call other HASA staff. Thank you.
Reminder 5/16/09: Send in the official entry form we mailed out, not a copy. Otherwise it adds extra work for the folks on Oahu to check with us for legitimacy. Thanks.
Update 5/14/09: Make States payment out to "HSA". Mail to the address on the States entry form. Please let us know if you will not be attending.
Update 4/20/09:
Clarification Update 4/15/09: FYI: This is the first year in 10 years that HASA has been able to pay any kind of entry fees for States. The kids (under 18) divisions that had more than 2 competitors came first, then came most adult divisions with more than 2 qualifiers.
Stay tuned for more updates in the Summer. HASA has some exciting changes in the works for next year!
Big Island Weekly HASA video by Isaac Frazer
2nd Update 4/11/09: To be fair to all members who entered 4 contests, and to stick with the rules, we are holding strong to the qualifying rule of 4 contests minimum. If you have any questions, email bigislandhasa@yahoo.com or call 934-7343.
Update 4/11/09: STATES
We will be mailing entry forms to those qualifiers this coming week. Please email us if your address has changed since last October. We will not be responsible if you do not receive the entry form. If you qualify and have not received an entry form by April 17, please email or call 934-7343.
Your entry form will have the division/s you qualify for circled. If you believe you qualify for another division, email us immediately so we can either correct the mistake or clear up any misunderstanding. Do not change, add, or swap divisions without our written approval. If you have divisions circled that you will not be entering, simply cross out the division and let us know so we can take you off that list.
The deadline to enter States is May 25. Make payment out to HSA and mail your signed entry form (no copies) with payment to the address on the form.
If you qualify and will not be competing at States, let us know via email or the hotline as soon as possible.
Email or call the hotline 934-7343 if you have any questions. Once again, please do not call our personal home number.
Please share this information with anyone who does not have internet access. fyi, the public library has free internet access.
We do not know what divisions will compete on what days. We usually do not know that information until the day of the contest. To be safe, be prepared for your heat when the contest begins at 7am June 4. There will be an awards ceremony at Hard Rock Cafe Saturday night starting around 5 or 6pm. You will be responsible for picking up (or having someone pick up for you) any awards and prizes you may receive.
All competitors are responsible for their own entry fees, lodging, meals and transportation. We will not be responsible for unchaperoned minors.
Some helpful information:
Update 4/5/09:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update 4/4/09: The following divisions are almost full (less than 3 spots left): Jr. Men SB and Boys BB. This doesn't mean you are guaranteed beach entry in the other divisions. They may fill up or be combined. Beach entry closes at 7am so we can start the contest on time. We are aiming for a 7:30 start.
4/2/09: The contest at Honoli'i for this Sunday is ON. Beach entry will close at 7:00am sharp. No exceptions. If you didn't mail in your entry, come extra early so you aren't turned away. See important update below.
Once again, new members will not be accepted for the April contest. This includes one time entries and anyone who has not surfed in a HASA contest this season (October to March). Only individuals who have already entered at least 1 event and paid membership this year may enter the April contest. No exceptions. Our next season will begin in October. Email any questions or concerns to bigislandhasa@yahoo.com and call the HASA line at 934-7343. We do our best to communicate what you need to know through those lines. Please do not call our personal home number!! All members are urged to mail in your entries early to secure yourselves a spot in the contest. Divisions are expected to fill quickly and beach entries may be turned away.
REMINDER: YOU MUST ENTER AT LEAST 4 BIG ISLAND HASA EVENTS TO QUALIFY FOR STATES. We will be determining who qualifies for State Championships and how many surfers we will be sending after the April contest (not on the same day). We will not know details until after the day of the contest. Entry forms for those who qualify for States will be mailed directly to the address you gave on your first membership form. Stay tuned to this page for more updates.
To help pay for a limited number of entries to States, we will not be ordering shirts for the April Honolii contest. Trophies will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in each surfed division.
We do not have a sponsor for prizes for our final event. Please send email to bigislandhasa@yahoo.com if interested
Update 3/20/09:
Update 3/10/09:
Update 3/2/09:
Reminder: To be fair to the boys who are already members and competing for a chance to go to the State Championships, Boys BB is closed to new members for the rest of the season.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Be sure to check out Isaac Frazer's "It's All Swell" section of Big Island Weekly every Wednesday. There are also video clips at BigIslandWeekly.com Thanks Isaac!
Also, Tommy Adkins of SurfTribePhoto.com photographed our last event. Thanks Tommy! You can find pictures of yourself at at SurfTribePhoto.com.
Reminder: If you are entered in the contest and want to enter a 2nd division, you must do so before beach entry closes at 7:00am.
To be fair to the boys who are already members and competing for a chance to go to the State Championships, Boys BB is closed to new members for the rest of the season.
To everyone: We are not accepting any entries over the phone. We cannot add your name to the books and lineup until you have paid. No exceptions.
To everyone: Please do not call our home phone number regarding HASA, even if you know Adam. We have both the hotline and website to keep the lines of communication open. Mail your payments early to the PO box.
Our next HASA event is coming up quickly. We are near membership capacity which means that divisions will fill quickly and beach entry will be closed to some divisions. Sending in your entry early is the best choice all around.
Changes cannot be made once the contest begins. If you enter and do not show up then you will receive points only for your division and it WILL count towards qualification for the states (you must enter 4 events to qualify). We cannot apply your entry toward later events unless you call the hotline or email BEFORE the contest that you did not show up for. This includes if you have to leave early or miss your division.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Update 12/03/08:
We would like to thank the entire HASA staff for volunteering at the Honoli'i Keiki Contest 11/22/08. HASA was in charge of judging the privates/south side of the competition. This was a 100% VOLUNTEER event. We appreciate all your hard work and dedication.
Update 11/16/08:
Update 11/15/08:
Miki Minamishin and Kanoa Klobucar, please email us at BigIslandHASA@yahoo.com or call the hotline. If anyone knows them, please let them know that we are trying to get a hold of them in regards to the waiver. All contestants under 18 will not be allowed to surf until a parent or legal guardian (legal by law) signs their waiver.
Update 10/17:
Note to all participants: Please mail in your entries by the Wednesday before the contest. Sending your entry in time helps us run a more efficient contest and it saves you $15 in beach entry fees. Also, don't forget to include the AAU Insurance Application Form . Fill out just the top portion (from name down to member's and parent signatures...ignore the rest) and mail it with your entry to us at HASA-Hawaii Chapter, po box 685, Hilo, HI 96721. Please do not mail it to the Florida address at the bottom. Send it to us. The cost of insurance is included in the membership fee. You should send 3 forms with your payment: entry form, membership application, and the AAU (insurance) application.

ALOHA AND WELCOME to the 2009 HAWAII STATE SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS, this season proudly Presented by HARD ROCK CAFE and SURFTECH. Within hours the first rounds will begin at 7 a.m. SHARP. All contestants please check your heat times and drivers should arrive to the Magic Island parking lot to walk gear/boards/everything for the 3 long hot days, as early as possible. Tent positions are first come first get along the water line, so that's why we say arrive early! Saturday's awards ceremony is 4 blocks away at the Hard Rock Cafe, who have been able to get additional parking for everyone across the street at the State Convention Center, which will ONLY stay open until 9 p.m. . At that point your vehicle will be locked away or towed, so PLEASE NOTE ! OK, time to get in the water and tear it up one more time for the ''STATES!''
Please do not contact the Director on Oahu for any reason. He is dealing with hundreds of entries from 4 islands and, like us, he has a full-time job. All questions and problems can be handled with us, within the island, by calling the hotline 934-7343 or email bigislandhasa@yahoo.com. Once again, we will only return calls that regard information that is not on the website or information that we do not know (ie: did they receive your entry, what is the schedule). We will not return calls left at our home number. We hope to get a schedule on Wednesday, but don't depend on it. Be ready for your heat Thursday morning at 7am and keep track of when you surf so you don't miss your heat (they don't give refunds). Look for the Big Island tent makai of the contest scaffolding. Adam will be there with heat info and advice, and you can hang out and support one another. We will not be responsible for unchaperoned minors. Thank you for your kokua.
TO EVERYONE:: The deadline for entries has passed. IF YOU HAVE NOT MAILED IN YOUR ENTRY BY NOW, IT'S TOO LATE! Entries are no longer accepted. ALSO, DO NOT ENTER FOR STATES ONLINE. That is for Oahu's regular season only, not for States. We're holding up the Oahu Director from making the schedule, and you have all had over a month to send them in. Thank you to everyone who sent in your entries early. We appreciate you doing your part to help give Big Island the good reputation it deserves!
If you have any questions regarding States, don't hesitate to email Michelle at bigislandhasa@yahoo.com or call Adam at 934-7343. Phone calls will only be returned regarding information that is not on the website or entry form. Phone calls to our personal home number will not be returned. Also, please do not call other HASA staff. Thank you.
Because we didn't order shirts for the last contest, HASA was able to pay entry fee for a limited number of the 1st place ranking finishers (those with a "1" marked in the final ranking column). Several 1st place finishers will receive a check made out to HSA with your entry form. Mail that check with your entry form directly to HSA (do not cash). The amount is to pay only for the division noted on your letter (the division you ranked 1st in). Additional division payment is your responsibility. Please return the check to HASA Hawaii Chapter if you will not be surfing.

Save the dates: States Invitational at Ala Moana Bowls June 4, 5, 6, 2009
IMPORTANT UPDATE 3/25/09:
We will not be accepting new members or one-time entries (in all divisions) for our final contest of the season April 5 at Honolii. The last event of the season is usually the biggest and, since we have over 140 members this season, this is the only way we can make it happen.
~Adam and Michelle
The poll has been removed due to offensive language in the comments section. We won't be doing any more polls. For anyone concerned, an up-to-date income statement for HASA can be found in the Contest Binder at the HASA table at the next contest in April.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
HASA would like to thank our sponsor Jeff Hunt Surfboards for sponsoring the Pohoiki event with prizes. Be sure to stop by the shop in Pahoa and thank Jeff and Tiffany!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The contest for this Sunday, March 8 at Pohoiki is on. Reminder: Beach entry will close at 7am sharp (this includes pre-paid members who are entering a 2nd division). Late-comers will be turned away. No exceptions. We strongly recommend that you mail in your entries before Wednesday instead. Mail in the one entry form along with payment. There's no need to mail in the waiver or insurance forms if you have already sent them earlier this season. Also, please do not call our personal home phone number or ask to drop off payment at our home or work, even if you know Adam. Everyone is responsible for mailing in their entries in time. Mahalo.
Remember he does this on his own time so if you want him to stick around, order pictures.
~You save money by avoiding the higher beach entry fee
~You guarantee yourself a spot in the contest
~You save yourself the stress of waking up extra early only to be turned away because your division is full
~You save us the stress of taking your entry at the last minute and having to turn people away.
Beach entry will close at 7:00am and some divisions will most likely be closed to beach entry altogether. If you show up in line past 7:00, you will be turned away. This is the only way we can run a successful contest within the amount of time we have. We cannot stress enough to mail in your entry early. It is due in the HASA po box no later than the Wednesday before the contest.
One more quick reminder that entries for the canceled Banyans event will automatically be transferred over to the upcoming December event at Honoli'i unless we have heard from you otherwise. You must let us know before the day of the Honoli'i event if you want your entry to be transferred to a different event besides Honoli'i. Changes will not be allowed on the day of the contest or afterwards (ie: last minute commitments, no shows, no ride, etc.). If you have any questions, email HASA at the link on the home page.
Just a reminder that if you entered the November event at Banyans then you are automatically entered in the December event unless we have already spoken with you, or if you leave us an email or message on the hotline telling us otherwise. We officially have over 144 members this year (and still growing). Please do not call our home/personal phone number for any reason. Use the hotline number 934-7343 that is on the home page and entry form. If you have not yet pre-entered, mail in entries will be on a first-come-first-served basis for the December event. We already have a full event for December so beach entries will be accepted for empty divisions only. The following divisions have less than 4 spaces available each and will most likely be closed to beach entries: Boys Bodyboard, Open Men Shortboard, Menehune Shortboard, Girls Shortboard. ~Mahalo, Adam and Michelle
The contest is OFF for Sunday 11/16 at Banyans in Kona. We apologize for the late notice. The expected swell didn't happen. Adam has been checking the conditions and it looks like the surf will decrease even further tomorrow. We realize this is a huge inconvenience. Please keep in mind that the contests run 8 hours and the current window of surfable conditions (low tide) only runs a small fraction of that time. If you pre-entered the event, your entry will apply to the next contest at Honoli'i Dec. 14 unless you email (or call the hotline) otherwise. DLNR requires at least 1 month's notice for permits, so this event will be canceled and we will have 5 events this season. The minimum requirement to enter 4 events to qualify for States remains the same.
BEACH ENTRIES:
To help make things run smoothly on Sunday, please have all forms filled out along with correct payment. Payment should include beach entry fee ($45), membership ($30) and any additional division fees. You should have 3 forms:
1. Entry form (please print clearly)
2. AAU (insurance) application (fill out the top part down to signature only, do not mail to the Florida address on the form)
3. Membership Application with Hold Harmless Waiver (on the same form)
Surfers will not be allowed to compete without the Hold Harmless Waiver signed. If you are under 18 please make sure you have a parent there to sign the hold harmless waiver if they have not already done so.
